Lonesome Dove Fest, sponsors support activities, education on Youth Day
by Ralph Willingham
(Posted 9/1/2010 09:00 am)

Many youth will get their first exposure to firearms at Lonesome Dove Fest. Volunteers are the machinery that makes the Karnes County Lonesome Dove Fest run like a fine-tuned race car, but the fuel for the engine comes from generous donations courtesy of a variety of sponsors.
From providing funding for the spacious air-conditioned tent filled with exhibitors, to arranging for musical entertainment at the Saturday evening activities, sponsors are the life-blood of what is the annual two-day, family-oriented festival that is the largest event of its kind in the Lone Star State.

by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 9/1/2010 09:00 am)
A citizens' patrol group has been formed in Runge in an effort to address the community's long-running law enforcement problems.
"It will be nothing but cruising at night reporting suspicious activities," Craig Funke, a member of the group, said.
Funke made his comments August 24 at a city council meeting. The council approved a resolution supporting the group and will allow the group to have application forms available at city hall.
Funke said the Karnes County Sheriff's Office was very supportive of the group. In order to participate as a member of the group, applicants must be willing to be More

The City of Karnes City will host public hearings on the next two Wednesdays to receive input on a tax rate increase for the upcoming fiscal year.
The City has proposed increasing the rate from $0.7682 per $100 of taxable value to $0.7700 per $100 in taxable value to maintain the same level of funding it enjoyed last year.
The increase in tax payments would be approximately $4.13 for the average home in Karnes City. The public hearings on September 8 and 15 will begin at 6 p.m. at Karnes City Hall.

Summer rainfall heavy, but not historic
by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 8/25/2010 03:44 pm)
It might seem difficult to believe, but Karnes County is going through one of the wettest periods in recent history.
The last decade was the second-wettest on record, and the 2010s are off to a good start as more than 20 inches of rain have fallen through the first six months of this year.
Meteorologist Todd Flanigan agreed it has been unusually damp lately, but cautioned against making any plans to start digging a moat quite yet. Changes are afloat in the Pacific Ocean, which could mean dry times are coming along with a relief from the summer heat. More

by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 8/25/2010 03:43 pm)
Ray Kroll said he was promised fun, and fun he did receive at the groundbreaking for the Tierra Pointe Apartment Complex Thursday morning. Elected officials and community leaders received a mini-ticker tape parade after donning the traditional shovels and hard hats to celebrate the 80-unit apartment complex's entry into Karnes City.
Susan Sheeran, president of Merced Housing Texas, told the crowd of more than 40 people a story about a group of Catholic sisters that created the organization 16 years ago to "create and strengthen healthy communities by providing quality, affordable, service-enriched housing for individuals and families who are More

Karnes City water system to be among 'best in USA'
by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 8/25/2010 03:42 pm)
Karnes City will have one of the most modern water systems in Texas, if not the United States of America, if City Manager Larry Pippen has his way.
Pippen started a process back in 2006 that is beginning to show as work on the Karnes City water tower moves closer to completion and 41,000 meters of water lines have already been replaced in the city.
Top water quality is the final goal of the program, which has been embarked upon in phases and could be basically complete by 2012, at which time Pippen plans to take on an overhaul More

The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) came out with a strong statement against lowering any water quality standards in area waterways last week. Local boxing club teaches more than how to win
by Dan Kleiner

Chris Tobar, right, trains with his uncle, Domingo Tobar, at the Tocallos Boxing Gym in Karnes City. Tobar won a gold medal in the 80-pound weight class at the Texas Games of Waco during the first weekend in August, and was one of four club members to come home with a gold. In the background is a table full of medals and trophies the club members have won in just more than a year. They train in the shadow of the Karnes City water tower, but it provides no shade from the 100-degree sun that burns down when practice starts around 5 p.m. There are no fans or misters or even shade of any real kind around "The Rock," the ring and the classroom for the members of the Tocallos Boxing club.
The group of young Karnes City boxers proved its toughness not just from the elements, but in the ring the first weekend in August when all four boxers that competed in the Texas Games of Waco came home with gold medals as More

Conduct, evidence become issues as trial date nears in Hummel case
by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 8/18/2010 09:13 am)
Both sides are crying foul in the pending assault case involving Pct. 1 County Commissioner Carl Hummel, and one side got the attention of Judge Bert Richardson last week.
Richardson held a hearing in Karnes City District Court Thursday that could result in Betty Yarter, attorney for Craig Hummel and Karen Hale, being found in contempt of court. A trial judge can not hold a lawyer in contempt for misbehavior in front of himself, but Richardson took exception to Yarter's treatment of a cell phone that will likely no longer be able to be entered as evidence in the trial.

by Dan Kleiner
(Posted 8/18/2010 09:12 am)
The City of Kenedy should be spruced up quite nicely as a result of several different actions taken by City Council August 10.
Council awarded a bid for its 2010 Street Improvement Program, accepted a proposal for a new light system at the Red Holchak Baseball Field, took a needed step for a new motel, and heard from its Main Street Beautification Committee during the course of the regular monthly meeting.
Some initial steps have already been completed for the Street Improvement Program, and the bulk of the work for year one should begin some time around mid- to late More
