Hartsel Lee Edwards Sr.

Hartsel Lee Edwards, Sr. was born in Choate, TX on July 24, 1926, to Charles N. and Mattie M. Edwards. Hartsel was one of nine children: Ruth Pogue, Wilma Parker, Margaret Hoff, (Fud) Arthur Edwards, (Dink) Sam Edwards, (Babe) Charles Noah Edwards Jr., Jerrye Hatchett and Jim B. Edwards.
Hartsel joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 16, and after a medical discharge joined the Merchant Marines. Hartsel was in the cattle business with his father in Bee County, oversaw seed production and harvesting in the lower Rio Grande Valley for G. E. Pogue Seed Co. for many years, and farmed his own land.
Hartsel was married to Ruth Passmore on July 23, 1949, and had four children: Deborah Edwards (Jan. 9, 1952 –Dec. 23, 1980); Hartsel Lee (Scottye) Edwards, Jr. (Sept. 3, 1953 – Mar. 9, 1994); Leslie Smith of Converse, TX and Matthew Edwards of Los Angeles, CA. Grandchildren Lee Henson, Jon Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Lindsay Edwards, Connor Edwards, Brittany Edwards and Dillon Edwards.
Hartsel married Laurenty Aldrete Simpson on Dec. 22, 1982 in Kenedy.
Hartsel passed away after a lengthy illness at Bluebonnet Manor September 1, 2009 in Karnes City, Texas.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Eckols Chapel with Jim B. Edwards officiating. Interment was in the Pawnee Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Billy Charles Hatchett, Jim Rocket Hatchett, Arthur Edwards, Tommy Parker, Jim Pogue and Keith Walters.
