Gertrude Hollman Pullin
 (Posted 9/23/2009 05:00 am)
Now at peace in the loving arms of her Savior, Gertrude Hollman Pullin passed away on September 15, 2009, having lived a long and fulfilling life of 101 years. Born November 6, 1907 in Sagerton, Texas to first generation American Germans Henry E. and Martha O. Hollman, she spent her early years in Plainview, Texas and Roswell, New Mexico.
As a child, she attended school in a one-room school house and later as a 13 year old boarded with a couple for whom she worked. In 1922, her family moved to Kenedy, Texas where she attended high school, was confirmed in the Lutheran church in 1923, attended high school and graduated in 1925.
At the age of 17, on May 17, 1925 she married Tommie Pullin. They moved to Taft in 1926. During the Depression, she earned $12 a week managing a dry goods store. They bought their first home in Taft with a mortgage of $11 a month. To help make ends meet, they rented a room to two ladies for $5 a month.
In 1933, they opened a grocery store, then in 1939 built the home in which they lived until their deaths. After serving as a wife and mother, in 1952 she went to work at the First State Bank. She earned $150 per month, and that included working half day on Saturday. A Christmas bonus was given – a silver dollar. She retired after 22 years and was given a watch.
Beautification was always important to her. She had a natural green thumb and her yard was always manicured. Another talent was making flower arrangements for her church and friends. In 1988, she led an effort to plant oleanders along Highway 181. She personally grew about 50 of the oleanders, which are still striving today. She was active in a number of civic organizations; the city of Taft named her “Citizen of the Year” in 1994.
After the death of her husband of 52 years, she was appointed to serve his unexpired term of Justice of the Peace. She was elected for two more full terms and loved every moment of it.
She has two sons, 5 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren. She always remembered every birthday.
Probably nothing defined her more than her love of the Lord, serving Him in all her actions. God blessed her with great health and she will be missed by her many friends and family. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the South Texas Children’s Home, P. O. Box 1210, Beeville, TX 78104 or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 17, at 2 p.m. at the Eckols Chapel. Interment will be held in the Kenedy Cemetery.
