Kenedy City Council to take down light poles at Red Holchak Field

The most discussed issue on the agenda at the Jan. 12 meeting of the Kenedy City Council was the Red Holchak Field lighting system.
Larry Kiesling was present at the meeting representing the 4B Corporation and to address the dire need to replace the lighting system.
Kiesling addressed the board with urgency since baseball season is around the corner.
He said the Kenedy coaches are having difficulty rescheduling games and do not want to play during the day, which is what has to happen without a safe lighting system.
Not only are there problems with the school’s baseball teams playing at the field but this also affects the summer youth programs. They do not like to have day games because of parents’ work schedules. Kiesling said that something needed to be done now because of the safety issue. The lights are not under code compliance or UIL standards.  He said that it is evident that the poles are a danger and can fall in the day as well as at night and need to be taken down.
Councilman Bob Patton and Mayor Randy Garza both voiced the safety concern. They agreed that to ensure the well being of the kids, the council would have to “bite the bullet” and get the poles down as soon as possible.
How to go about this financially and in concordance with the previous contract between the city and school is an issue as well.
As far as the contract goes, Kiesling said, “The contract stated that if either party did not hold up their end and they default and then the contract is null and void.”
He also said he didn’t get the feeling the school had the money to address the situation. He said the city (continued)
