My inquisitive daughter

My daughter has millions of questions.

She tests me constantly on my knowledge of life.

Sometimes the questions are easy, like…

"Daddy, what’s an ark?"

We were reading a story about Noah’s Ark.

"Well, sweetie, the Ark was a very big boat that Noah built," I told her. "You can read all about it in the bible."

Sometimes she asks questions that are harder to answer.

She saw some people smoking cigarettes in front of a convenience store and asked, "What are those things in their mouths?"

"Those are cigarettes," I told her. "People set them on fire and put it up against their mouths so they can breathe smoke into their lungs."

"What?" she asked. "You’ve got to be kidding! Why do they do that?"

"Well, you know, I used to smoke cigarettes before I met Mommy."

"Yes, I knew that," she said, with a somewhat condescending tone in her voice.

"One day I finally realized that smoking was a habit that was bad for my health, it stained my teeth and made me smell bad… So, I decided to quit smoking."

"But why did you start smoking in the first place?" she asked.

Like I said earlier, some questions are harder to answer than others.
