Kenedy ISD needs divine intervention

The most recent controversy at Kenedy ISD has caused many people stress, worry and anxiety – myself included.

Some have asked me, "Why do you care about Kenedy? Why does this bother you so much?"

My answer is always, "Why don’t you care?"

Although I never attended a class at Kenedy ISD, there is a history there in my family.

My father played football for the Lions and my mother played Volleyball for Kenedy High School. Both graduated from Kenedy High School more than 50 years ago and it’s plain to me that the school district did a very good job of educating the children of the community at that time.

But now look at what’s become of Kenedy ISD.

An unacceptable number of students leave the school system without basic knowledge of reading, writing or math.

The school board members are divided, and reasonable trustees now find themselves outnumbered by unreasonable trustees who feel they don’t owe any explanation at all to the community that elected them to hold their trust as public servants.

It is unclear whose interest they are serving, but in the absence of any explanation for their actions, many are left to draw the conclusion that whatever interest they are serving, it’s not what’s best for the school district.

So many people have asked, "What can be done?"

In all seriousness I would ask the people of this community to pray for divine intervention, because honestly I think that’s what it’s going to take.

When I think about the arguments, bickering, name-calling and fighting among the school board members, I wonder if these trustees remember the part of the Bible that calls on us to love our neighbors.

This is from the book of John:

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another."

This is from the book of Matthew:

"Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

I don’t know how many people in Kenedy have watched their elected trustees in action, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that you won’t see many examples of neighborly love at these meetings.

It takes a lot of love for people to be able to set aside their differences and work together for the betterment of the whole community. I’m asking for everyone to pray for unity and harmony at Kenedy ISD. Beyond that, I’m asking for everyone to get involved, learn the issues and support candidates that will work for a better school district and a better, brighter future for the children of the community.
