Indiana Jones

This past Sunday, my wife and I and our almost six-year-old daughter treated ourselves to a movie.

The three of us went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

It was an early anniversary/Father’s Day celebration.

This was the fourth Indiana Jones movie I’ve seen and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic.

Back in 1981, I was hooked when I saw the first one – Raiders of the Lost Ark.

It remains one of my all-time favorite movies.

The combination of thrilling action sequences, often tongue-in-cheek comic relief, and good characters, plot and dialogue made for a very entertaining movie. The beautiful musical score greatly enhanced the action on the screen. When the trumpets blasted the main theme as Indy’s plane lifts off the water, barely escaping certain doom, it sent chills down my spine, and 27 years later, the sound of these trumpets still sends chills down my spine.

Although this was the fourth Indiana Jones movie I’ve seen, this past Sunday’s outing was my daughter’s first.

I certainly enjoyed the movie, but I enjoyed seeing her enjoy it even more so.

There were some parts that were almost a little too scary for her at her age.

I’d look over at her and she would have her hands over her eyes, but then I’d look again and I’d catch her "peeking" at the action on the screen.

She’s reaching an age where she’s really starting to understand the world around her and so now she is better able to enjoy movies of this kind which are very different than the "kids" movies that she’s accustomed to.

I was just 16 years old when I walked out of that movie theatre with such a big grin on my face after having a front row seat for what seemed to me to be the adventure of a lifetime. At that time, I had no idea what kind of adventure life had in store for me.

Seeing the smile on my daughter’s face as we stepped out of the theatre into bright sunlight on a hot south Texas summer day was really something special.

For us, Indiana Jones has become a family tradition.

We don’t know if there will be a fifth one. That’s a decision Mr. Spielberg will have to make.

But we sure hope so.
