Father's Day

I hope every father in our community and beyond enjoyed Father’s Day on Sunday.
I certainly did.
We had a nice get-together at my mom and dad’s house in Kenedy.
There were three dads there – my dad, my brother and myself.
It was a combined celebration because this year, Father’s Day and my son’s third birthday fell on the same day – June 15.
I became curious about how often this would happen.
"How often would my son Andrew celebrate his birthday on Father’s Day?" I wondered.
"Would it be once every seven years?"
I didn’t know, so I looked it up.
One of the neat things about computers is that you can look up calendar dates, far, far, far into the future.
It’s really helpful, for instance, in those situations where you want to plan a celebration to take place way down the road. If I wanted to pick a date to celebrate my wife and my 75th wedding anniversary – I could do that! Of course, I probably won’t need to do that, but still, it’s good to know that I can if I need to.
Anyhow, I looked it up and as it turns out there is no predictable pattern to when Andy’s birthday will fall on Father’s Day. This is due to the fact that Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June and because of the way the calendar works, this means it can be on either June 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 21.
After looking it up, I found out that Andy will celebrate his 9th, 20th, 31st, 37th and 48th birthdays on Father’s Day. I’m sure there are a few more coinciding dates beyond that, but I only searched the next 50 years.
I hope that each of these coinciding celebrations will be as great as the one we had Sunday.
Andrew received many toys for his birthday and among them was a set of toy trains from his grandparents who live in Canada.
Andrew, me and my dad sat together on the floor and played with the toy trains that afternoon and he never got tired of playing with them – and neither did the "dads" who were there to show him the ropes.
It was a great Father’s Day.
