Gymnasts

I don’t know about the rest of you, but the TV at our household was tuned to the Olympic Games in Beijing quite a bit over this past weekend.
My six-year-old daughter and I have been watching a lot of different sports, but she seems the most interested in gymnastics.
When we first started watching, I would ask her, "Do you think you can do that?"
At first she said "yes" but after watching for a while, she changed her mind, deciding that the skill level demonstrated by the athletes was a little bit higher than her own abilities.
The more she watched, the more impressed she became by the way these athletes would launch themselves high into the air, flipping and twirling and managing to come to a perfect landing after all those mid-air twists and turns.
"Dad, let me have your phone," she instructed.
I handed over my cell phone and watched as she began to make a video of the gymnasts’ routines.
"This is unbelievable," she said. "I’ve got to record this."
And so she did, recording routine after routine, for posterity’s sake.
I didn’t have the heart to tell her that the folks at NBC were probably keeping recordings of the Olympic events, as well. It seemed like she felt it was her duty to record this so that it could be shown to future generations.
My wife said that the gymnasts have to be 16 years old to compete, but I swear some of the "women" gymnasts on China’s team are really not much larger than our six-year-old who was recording video of the TV screen.
I was able to find some stats on the members of the team.
One of them, Deng Linlin, is just 4 feet 5 inches tall and weighs just 68 lbs.
I think there are some roller-coasters in this country that she wouldn’t be allowed to ride.
And we are supposed to believe she is just 16 years old?
I think they must be taking the coach’s word for it.
The difference between the American and Chinese "women’s" gymnastic teams is certainly striking, although it is plain to see there is an abundance of talent and skill on both sides, regardless the size of the athlete.
It will be interesting to see which team earns gold this year.
We’ll keep watching – and recording.
