My short column

My friend Joe Brubaker sometimes sends us "short" columns.

I am often amused that he seems to apologize for this – as if he is "short changing" us by sending fewer words than the "average" column length.

Fact is, I like short columns, and I think our readers like them, too.

The Gettysburg Address, for example, was only 275 words.

I admit that I am often too long winded.

Once I get wound up, it gets hard for me to stop typing.

This week, however, I’m joining my friend Joe in submitting a very short column.

My message is simple and short.

After watching the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ike this past week, I would like to encourage anyone reading this column to give.

Texans are hurting tonight, as I write this.

Many of our Texas neighbors and neighbors in other states have lost loved ones, or their homes, or perhaps all that they own.

We can help.

I know this is a state where people care about each other and help each other – often just when it is needed the most.

It’s easier than ever these days to donate online or by telephone.

The amount doesn’t matter – even small amounts can really add up when donated by many people.

There are many organizations to which you can donate to help people suffering as a result of the catastrophic damage brought to our shores and beyond by Hurricane Ike.

Here are two:
