Thanks for the memories
Folks I just returned from spending a few days back in Ohio. Craig, Betty and I returned to the land of our births and where we spent our younger days.
There is an old saying that tells us that you can’t go back. However that is only partly true. You can go back physically and in our memories. However if we think that places and people will be about the same, we would be in for a shock. It is a pleasure to see relatives and friends from younger days and even talk over those times, but we cannot relive the past. Time marches on and if we are smart we move with it. Does this mean that we do not hold on to things of value from the past? Of course not! The kind of person we are today has been shaped by events and people of the past. Be that as it may we are still being shaped by the people and events in today’s world.
We had a great time up there with our relations and friends. After settling in with Betty’s brother and sister we were driven around by a gracious niece. We arrived on a Monday evening at the Dayton airport. Tuesday we had lunch with former students who graduated from high school in 1948 and 1949. Most of them were basketball players, their wives and cheerleaders and their husbands. There were other students and their spouses. Some of our special older friends dropped by also.
I would be amiss if I did not tell you that these ball players were special. They played on the team that went just four games from the Ohio State championship and it took the eventual state champs to beat them.
Wednesday we had lunch with members of Betty’s high school graduating class, along with three of the members of my class.
You can’t go back? Of course you can! So what if it was only in our memories. It was a great time.
What happened on Thursday? Find out in the next week or two in The Countywide.
