Hooray for God

Folks the other evening I was with a group of folks listening to a video and discussing our religious beliefs. The person on the video expressed the view that many of us are not enthusiastic or passionate concerning our belief in God. She noted that many of us are often very passionate about sports. Wham! That hit me squarely between the eyes.

Ever since I was a very young lad and playing softball in a cow pasture I have been enthusiastic about sports. Not only did I participate in sports as a youngster, I continued as a high school and college athlete. I became an athletic coach and school administrator. All in all I gave of my time, energy and talent. As a fan I was a loyal and vocal supporter of my team. I did not sit quietly by and let other fans cheer them on! No, I let others know what I believed and how I felt about my team.

Folks, what hit me, between the eyes, was that I have not shown this enthusiasm for God. Why Not? As I contemplated my dilemma I came up with the usual clichés. Religion is a personal thing, people will think I am a religious fanatic, it is none of my business what other people think or believe. People shouldn’t talk about religion because people get angry if their beliefs clash and friends are lost. Yet I did not and do not hesitate to voice my opinion concerning sports.

I think of the beautiful song written by Stuart Hamblen. It is no secret (What God can do).

Why then do I and perhaps, just perhaps one or two of you folks behave as if it is?
