A racing quail
Now folks, I don’t want you to think that I have gone off my rocker when I tell you I have been racing with a quail.
I can just hear some of you saying, that regardless of what he says, the old boy has flipped his lid. Be that as it may, it is the truth.
Oh I don’t have a foot race with this quail but we do race. I ride a golf cart out the ranch road to get the mail each morning and that is how I started racing with a quail.
One morning a young quail came out of the tall grass beside the road and proceeded to run along just ahead of me. Now I don’t go real fast, but faster than a person could walk. He or she kept just ahead of me running as fast as its little legs would go. I enjoyed watching those little legs going back and forth.
He kept this up for at least one hundred yards or more until I speeded up and he took off and flew over the trees. What became amazing to me was that it met me each day and proceeded to do the same thing. Of course I cannot vouch that it was the same quail but it appeared at approximately the same place each morning.
So I got to thinking that perhaps, just perhaps he enjoyed racing with me and the cart.
If anyone had noticed me they would have thought I was senile as I rode along apparently talking to myself and smiling a lot. Be that as it may, I enjoyed talking with that quail. I even asked if it enjoyed the race and what its name was.
Of course you cannot believe a quail as they all answer that question with a "Bob White" whistle.
So I just call him "Bob" as we go merrily along, the quail running and me acting a fool and enjoying every minute of it!
