A Bushel and a Peck

Folks, once again a song is swirling around in my mind. Some of the lyrics are: I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

When a song keeps dominating my thoughts I usually sit around and contemplate on why this is happening. Perhaps, I thought, it was because I received word that the basketball team I coached in 1948 is being considered for induction into the athletic hall of fame in Eaton, Ohio. If this does happen and the Good Lord willing I hope to be there for the installation.

What has this to do with the song you ask?

My mind went back to the last time I saw a group of these youngsters I taught and coached. (Oh yes I still see them as teenagers although they are now in their middle to late seventies). They asked me if I remembered telling them about what true love was.

Folks, 1948 was the year our daughter, Connie, was born. I told them what my wife said to me as she lay in labor in the hospital. I told them she looked up at me and asked me if I was alright as I looked so pale. There she was in pain but thinking about my welfare. That is true love I told them! They remembered this after what is now 60 years.

So love is a powerful thing. The Bible says that God is Love! Perhaps just perhaps that is why we all crave to be loved!

So if they are selected and the Good Lord willing, I will proudly stand and probably shed some tears as those boys I loved and still love, are inducted into the Hall of Fame. There are only three of the first ten members of that squad still living.

Be that as it may I remember them all and love them a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck!
