It seems like only yesterday

Folks, as a person reaches an advanced age, I believe it is only natural that we look back and think how fast time has flown by.

It seems like only yesterday that I was riding in a horse drawn buggy on the way to visit my grandparents. It seems like only yesterday that I was riding my tricycle on the dirt road that ran in front of our house. It seems that way but both of these events took place over 80 years ago.

Isn’t it remarkable how our minds work? Say yes, please, because it is!

I was sitting out on our back deck contemplating the wonders of my life. I recalled so many seemingly small things that helped shape me into the person I am today. I thanked God for His loving care throughout my life. I am so thankful that my long term memory is as sharp as it is.

My short term memory is another story.

I remember my first day of school and all the teachers I had during my public school education. It seems like only yesterday when I trotted out onto our high school basketball court. In my mind I see and hear the fans as they cheered us on. It seems like only yesterday when I drove my first car all by myself. It was a second hand 1928 Chevy that dad had purchased for $50. I, along with some friends, painted it grey with red trimming; which were our school colors. I recalled the first girl I ever really kissed! It was at a church camp but that kiss was a bit more than a brotherly and sisterly kiss.

It seems like only yesterday that I graduated from high school and got my first steady job. It was as a salesman in a clothing story and my salary was $12 for a six-day week.

It seems like only yesterday that Betty and I were married. Facts are that it will be 65 years in February. Time flies when you are having fun. I guess that is why it seems like yesterday.

Folks I realize I am a very fortunate man! There are millions of people that cannot look back and remember many happy times as they were growing up. That is a sad, sad story and I have no answer for it. However I do believe there is a better day coming!

We can sit around studying and wondering why this or that did or didn’t happen and we will never figure it out. Only God knows! The human mind is capable of many, many things but our thoughts are not God’s thoughts. Mankind will continue to discover many wonderful things; but there will always be things that happen and don’t happen that we will never understand.

It seems like only yesterday that mankind, in our egotistical thoughts, believed we had it all figured out. Perhaps, just perhaps, it really was only yesterday!
