On the wing again

Well folks I imagine you have noticed that the birds are on their annual flight to the south. The Yankees, in the community in which I grew up, said the birds are on the wing again – meaning the migration of the birds had started.

This morning, Betty noticed a cardinal eating at our bird feeder and my mind recalled those days of my youth as we watched the migratory flight of the birds.

Even the patrons and the bartender of the one saloon in our town would come outside and stare at a flight of geese as they headed south.

As a young boy I was interested in this phenomenon!

"How do they know it is time to fly south?" I asked.

"Instinct," was the reply.

This satisfied me when I was very young, but as I grew older I asked other questions.

"How do they select who will be the lead goose in the V, I wanted to know?"

Again, the answer was, "Instinct."

I also found out that the position of the goose at the head of the flock was changed every so often.

"Instinct," I was told.

"Hmmmm," I thought. "Where does that instinct come from?"

I don’t know about y’all, but I finally came to the conclusion that it comes from God.

Someone once said that God is even concerned about the little sparrow.

Folks, that is good enough for me!
