Hobson man dies in motorcycle accident

A Hobson resident was killed in the early morning hours of September 1 when his motorcycle struck a deer on F.M. 1144, according to an official DPS report.

Twenty-four-year-old Nicholas Hons was driving his 1982 Honda motorcycle traveling westbound about three miles west of Karnes City on 1144 when the accident occurred.

Karnes City resident Geronimo Alvear, 29, was riding with Hons as a passenger when their motorcycle struck a deer. Both men were ejected from the motorcycle.

Bake sale proceeds add up to hospital kids room improvements

Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital will be a bit brighter and more fun for sick kids that have to spend time there.

It’s all thanks to a sick kid who got better and her little sister.

Sophia Bianchi had a virus a few months ago that got worse than her mother and father Cletus and Daphne Bianchi would have liked. After spending some time recovering inside room 205 at Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital, she decided the place just needed more for kids to do.

Submarine ‘Texas’ will launch this weekend

The Navy will commission the USS Texas, second ship of the Virginia attack submarine class, Sept. 9, during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony at the Port of Galveston piers in Galveston, Texas.

As the Navy’s next-generation attack submarine, the Virginia-class submarine is the first class specifically designed to counter post-Cold War threats, providing the Navy with the capabilities required for safeguarding the nation’s interests in the 21st century.

Karnes County qualifies for livestock assistance because of ongoing drought

AUSTIN – Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs announced last week that livestock producers in 216 drought-stressed Texas counties may be eligible for $14.5 million in assistance under the recently announced federal Livestock Assistance Grant Program.

Karnes County is among the 216 counties listed.

The livestock block grant is part of a broad-based national drought disaster assistance program for American farmers and ranchers announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture this week.
