Sheriff’s office impounding loose cattle

Cattle on local roads and highways continues to cause concern for safety of motorists

Local experts and law enforcement are encouraging Karnes County ranchers to maintain and check their fencing as more cattle escape onto the roadways each day.

Officials at the sheriff’s department estimate they get between 30 and 40 calls a month related to loose cattle on or very near a roadway, and so far this year cattle-related vehicular accidents have claimed four lives, injured one person, and totaled two vehicles.

Karnes County property values continue to rise

It’s bad news for Karnes County agriculture workers, but rural land values are going up, up, up.

Here in the county, rural property is being appraised at a higher value every year due to a trend in buying.

Karnes County Appraisal District Chief Appraiser Kathy Barnhill said her office has taken a lot of flak for having appraised the properties at higher values, but said she’s went by the book and recent land sales have shown the properties to be worth more.

Trans Texas Corridor won’t likely pass through Karnes, Wilson counties

Plans unveiled by the Texas Department of Transportation late last month show Karnes County to be outside the latest plot for the Trans-Texas Corridor 35 major highway project.

The plan moving forward will be to connect TTC-35 with Interstate 35 south of San Antonio. That plan bypasses routes through Karnes County and possibly Wilson County.

The report issued by TXDOT says construction could begin as early as 2011, pending final environmental clearance.

Precinct 11 is moving to Kenedy Lutheran Church

The Lenz Hall, Precinct 11 polling place has been changed and approved by the US Department of Justice, according to local election officials.

The new official polling place for Precinct 11 is now Fellowship Hall of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Hwy. 72 in Kenedy.
