News (last updated on November 15, 2006) County officials say funds have been invested Republished with permission of The Victoria Advocate By Sonny Long KARNES CITY - A check for $2 million in Karnes County funds was recently written to purchase a 30-day interest bearing certificate of deposit. At the request of the Commissioners Court, County Treasurer Nancy Duckett agreed to take $2.3 million of the county’s $2.6 million in its general fund and place it in a CD, leaving $300,000 to pay the county’s outstanding bills. The funds had not been invested during five of the preceding 12 months, costing the county an estimated $60,000 in interest. (click here to read the whole story) Karnes City coach accused of bullying students Student pulled from chair to participate in cheer, another removed from class for wearing Beaver jersey By Jason Clay Jansky Karnes City school officials and their lawyers are refusing to comment on a series of incidents involving a teacher that had been accused of bullying some students into displaying Badger pride. The main incident occurred in a KCISD classroom October 20 where a student had been physically made to stand during a cheer. KCISD Interim Superintendent Eli Casey and one of the school’s lawyers Robert Russo both say the altercation between coach Doug Patton and the male student is a private personnel matter and is none of the public’s business. (click here to read the whole story) Father and son support one another in military service By Jason Clay Jansky This Veterans Day, two American soldiers with ties to Karnes County are getting more than support from the American people over the holiday. They’re getting support from one another as father and son. Former Kenedy High School student Ramon Trevino represents the fourth generation of military service in his family. A 20-year-old U.S. Army second-class private, he spent Veterans Day in Baghdad, Iraq, following in his father’s footsteps. Kenedy High School graduate Armando Trevino has been in the military as long as his son has been alive. Now a U.S. Air Force master sergeant, he has just returned from Kabul, Afghanistan where he spent several years overseeing the rebuilding and security of Afghan military airports. (click here to read the whole story) Hospital expansion groundbreaking will take place Sunday By Jason Clay Jansky Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday November 19 at 2 p.m. on the hospital grounds. The ceremony will officially begin construction on a $3.1 million hospital upgrade project, which is expected to be completed over the next year. Hospital officials have obtained a United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development Community Facilities loan to fund the project, which entails constructing a brand new physicians building and upgrading the current emergency room. With the added space, the hospital will not only be able to serve patients with more room, but will be able to provide additional services, hospital Administrator Nancy Kinkler said. (click here to read the whole story) Kenedy hires Walter Hill, Jr. as interim city administrator By Joe Baker Kenedy’s city council voted on November 7 to hire Walter Hill, Jr. as interim city administrator for the City of Kenedy. Kenedy Mayor Randy Garza said he expected Hill would work for the city for the next three to six months. Eleven people applied for the position and the group was narrowed to five by a panel appointed by the city council for the purpose of screening applicants for the position. The city offered a permanent position as city administrator to one applicant they felt was the best qualified, but he declined to accept the job offer. (click here to read the whole story) Quorum questions quash Falls City council meeting By Jason Clay Jansky Falls City council members took care of a few items of business before ending their regular meeting early November 8. Mayor Pro Tem Brent Houdmann made the decision to cut the meeting short five minutes after Mayor Vi Malone left for a school meeting. Houdmann took over her position, but questioned whether the city had a quorum a few moments later. Rather than continue without knowing for sure, he and council members Steve Swierc and Gery Jendrusch adjourned. Council members Ralph Bollman and Jeff Jonhson were absent from the meeting. (click here to read the whole story) Shortner elected Karnes County’s new district clerk In Karnes County there were only two local contested races in the General Election on Nov. 7. In the race for district clerk, Robbie Shortner (DEM) defeated Vi Swierc Malone (REP) 1,844 (59.08%) to 1,277 (40.92%). Incumbent Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Gilbert Garza (DEM) defeated write-in challenger Vidal Garza, Jr. by a tally of 444 (67.27%) to 216 (32.73%).
