News (last updated on February 28, 2007) 3 juveniles arrested in connection with Runge School vandalism By Jason Clay Jansky Three individuals are in custody at the Karnes County jail facing charges of burglary and criminal mischief in the February 5 break-in and vandalism of Runge school grounds. One individual was detained February 16, and then two more were taken into custody February 21. All three of the arrested boys are 14-year-old 8th graders, according to the Karnes County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff David Jalufka did not release the names of the individuals, citing state law that prevents him from disclosing the names of implicated minors. School officials cited the same laws after refusing to release the students’ names. (click here to read the whole story) Controversy surrounds ‘mandatory’ HPV vaccine By Jason Clay Jansky Republican Governor Rick Perry’s recent executive order making HPV vaccines mandatory for all girls attending sixth-grade public school next year has ignited a fire storm of controversy and legal argument across the state, including one law suit against the governor himself. There are legal fights in every corner of the political arena over the order Perry issued February 2. The "mandatory" wording in the order is anything but — parents in Texas still have the choice to refuse any vaccination and their children still can attend public schools. Still, judges, lawyers, and parents across the state are showing their contempt for Perry and his executive order in a variety of ways. Perry responded on his Web site February 5. (click here to read the whole story) Karnes City Chamber’s ‘Casino nite’ banquet this Saturday By Jason Clay Jansky The Karnes City Chamber of Commerce is set to hold its annual banquet March 3 and will be sticking to its "casino nite" theme for the third year in a row. The venue also will stay the same — the doors open at the Panna Maria hall, just across the street from the church in Panna Maria on FM 81, at 6 p.m. Casino-style gaming starts at 6:30 p.m. Roulette, craps, blackjack, and Texas Hold ‘Em will be available to play until 9:30 p.m. (click here to read the whole story) Local blood drives planned Officials with the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center are reminding Karnes County residents that anyone 17 years of age weighing at least 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood.
