News (last updated on April 25, 2007) Kenedy ISD trustees argue during school board meeting By Dana Busselman When discussing the approval of minutes of February and March school board meetings, Kenedy ISD school board members argued over use of the word "disturbance" during the board’s most recent meeting on April 16. Trustees Dwain Groff and Frank Nieto became involved in a heated discussion about how the incident would be reflected in the minutes. Nieto stated that police had been called and Groff said that calling the police was unnecessary. Argument continued as Groff questioned Nieto’s decision to move the date of the school board meeting. (click here to read the whole story) TxDOT announces local highway construction plans for Karnes County By Jason Clay Jansky The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has one Karnes County project under way for 2007, two projects planned for 2008, and growing concerns over the width of U.S. Highway 181 in the years to come. Restoring the pavement structure of State Highway 119 southeast of Gillett is just the beginning of their plans over the next two years. Road workers are already out near Gillett and the rehabilitation project is under way, but huge improvements to county roadways aren’t planned until the latter half of 2008. April 8, 2008 is the planned date to go out for bids on a huge State Highway 72 reconstruction project through downtown Kenedy. TxDOT will be reconstructing the roadway all the way from the stoplight intersection to where the road splits off into FM 792. (click here to read the whole story) Early voting for upcoming elections begins Monday Early voting for the upcoming May 12 elections will begin on Monday, April 30. The early voting will continue through Tuesday, May 8 for personal appearance. Voters can vote by mail. Voters who wish to vote by mail and have not received an application can call the County Clerk’s office at 780-3938. (click here to read the whole story) Falls City streets set for major overhaul By Jason Clay Jansky After more than a year of preparation, Falls City leaders voted during their April 18 meeting to take bids on a massive street project that will spend tax dollars accumulated over the last two budget cycles. Several streets around town are slated for repair and paving once council members accept a bid. The largest project on the list is the reconstruction of Merchant’s Alley from Menger Street to Meyer Street. Other projects on the list include seal coating Cooper Street between FM 791 and Swenson Street, seal coating and repairing Josephine Street, reconstruction of Yoakum Street, reshaping the base and seal coating Riviera and Chambourd streets, and seal coating Elwood and Terrell streets. "Bids will be opened at the end of May," Falls City Mayor Vi Malone said. (click here to read the whole story) Cemetery marker dedication this weekend The Karnes County Historical Commission is pleased to announce the erection and dedication of an official Historic Texas Cemetery Marker for the World War II Kenedy Alien Detention Camp Cemetery on Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m. The public is cordially invited to attend the ceremony, which will remember and honor five civilian alien detainees who died and were buried there during their internment. The Kenedy Alien Detention Camp Cemetery is located on the southeast outskirts of the City of Kenedy, Texas, alongside Karnes County Road 330 about one-fourth mile southeast of the Kenedy Cemetery and Loma Alta Cemetery. Because seating will be limited, attendees are requested to bring their own folding chairs and umbrellas for wet or sunny weather. (click here to read the whole story) National Day of prayer planned for next week The National Day of Prayer will be observed locally on Thursday, May 3 at noon at Joe Gulley Park in Kenedy. The National Day of Prayer Task Force’s mission is to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the five centers of power: Church, Education, Family, Government and Media.
