Kenedy school board approves improvement plan for superintendent

Trustees approve $463,507 track renovation project

After spending more than ninety minutes in a closed session consultation with the school district’s attorney, the Kenedy school board reconvened and voted to impose an improvement plan for Superintendent Richard Irizarry during Monday night’s regular school board meeting.

Trustee Dwain Groff made the motion to approve the improvement plan which was seconded by Trustee Tony Mejia. The motion carried on a 6-1 vote with Trustee Leo Valerio casting the only vote in opposition.

Increasing juvenile crime discussed at Commissioners Court

Karnes County’s Commissioners Court voted to approve a contract renewal with Atascosa Youth Service Center for juvenile detention services.

The center houses juveniles who are detained as a result of being charged with juvenile crimes.

The new contract remains at the $85 per day rate the county has been paying for juvenile detention.

The Court also approved a resolution authorizing the application for JABG grant funds related to addressing local juvenile crime issues.

Barrientez arraignment postponed

Jacob Barrientez was set to appear before district court May 10 regarding his felony manslaughter indictment, but his arraignment hearing was postponed.

Suspected of causing the January 18 shooting death of Roland Carrasco, Barrientez was indicted April 2 and scheduled to enter his plea May 10. His attorney was not able to make the hearing and it was postponed until May 29, according to District Clerk Robbie Shortner.

At the hearing, Barrientez will hear the charges against him and enter a plea.

Falls City officials discuss improvements to emergency services

Falls City’s council members and mayor are working on upgrading city emergency services.

During their regular May 9 meeting, they voted to reimburse EMS first responders $25 for every run they make, which Mayor Vi Malone said was a critical step in restoring the service.

"We have lost our first responders, so we’re trying to get that program started back up again," she said. "We have a lot of elderly people here in town and if one of them gets hurt or injured … we need someone to come in, assess the situation, and get them taken care of until EMS can get here."

Incumbents rule in local elections

Local voters said they want "more of the same" as incumbent office holders held off challengers in Saturday’s elections.

Incumbent Runge Mayor Homer Lott defeated challenger Edelia Ramirez 186-78.

Incumbent Runge ISD District 4 Trustee Felix Zapata defeated challenger Eloy Nunez 21-13.

Incumbent Kenedy ISD District 1 Trustee Velma Garza defeated challenger Gino Garcia 50-31.

Runge city council talks about making upgrades to fire station

Upgrades to the town’s fire station were discussed during Runge’s regular council meeting May 8.

The building is in serious need of repair, according to discussion, and council members Irma Ortiz and Eloy Nunez and Mayor Homer Lott each voted to spend $2,000 to patch the place up.

"Nothing has been done there for years," Lott told council.

Four windows need replacing, the back door is coming apart, the bathroom needs tile, and the roof is leaking, according to discussion.

Meningitis case diagnosed in Runge

Runge school officials notified parents on Monday that there has been a confirmed case of viral meningitis in the student population.

Because of the student’s right to privacy, school district officials are not at liberty to identify any specific information about the student.

A meeting was held Tuesday evening in the school cafeteria to help answer any questions parents may have had. School officials contacted the health department for advice about the illness, symptoms, and how to prevent it.
