News (last updated on May 30, 2007) Falls City’s mayor assumes duties of county treasurer County Treasurer Nancy Duckett will likely step down By Jason Clay Jansky After five months of absence, County Treasurer Nancy Duckett may be resigning soon, according to County Judge Alger Kendall, Jr. After hearing of her plans, Karnes County’s Commissioners Court interviewed five different applicants and chose Falls City resident Vi Malone to replace Duckett. Malone has been serving as chief deputy treasurer, awaiting Duckett’s official resignation. "We’ve been informed that Nancy intends to submit a resignation shortly. Based on that, we have hired Vi Malone to serve as temporary chief deputy treasurer," Kendall said. (click here to read the whole story) Psychologist says Karnes City boy is not a danger to other students By Jason Clay Jansky A court-appointed psychologist has determined the Karnes City boy facing criminal charges of making a terroristic threat is not a danger or threat to his peers, according to a recent statement made by Karnes County’s county judge. County Judge Judge Alger Kendall, Jr. said the reason the 14-year-old was held 20 days in juvenile detention was so a psychological evaluation could be carried out to determine whether he would be a threat if released into his parents’ custody. (click here to read the whole story) Karnes City officials approve utility rate increase By Jason Clay Jansky Karnes City residents will be spending about $10 more per month on utilities after city leaders voted to raise the minimum water and sewer rates during their May 22 meeting. The decision bumps the residential rate up by $5 and the commercial rate increases by $6. City Administrator Larry Pippen said the increase is necessary for the health of the town’s infrastructure. Water inside the city currently costs a minimum of $13 a month for residential accounts and $13.75 a month for commercial accounts. Residential sewer rates inside the city currently are $7.50 and rates outside the city run $11.50. (click here to read the whole story) New trash pickup date set for KC residents By Jason Clay Jansky Karnes City front lawns have become a junk yard over the past two months due to delayed trash pickup dates, but city officials insist everything will be made right June 4. City Administrator Larry Pippen said he had a private sit-down with two men from Waste Management in order to get the problem solved. "I met with them May 10 and I have been assured and guaranteed that the trash pickup will commence June 4," Pippen said. "They have apologized to the city and the citizens. They were so far behind based on weather the past months that they’ve never caught up."
