News (last updated on July 25, 2007) 6 men charged in knife attack outside Kenedy bar By Joe Baker A Kenedy man was jumped by a group of six men outside Outlaws Saloon in Kenedy on Thursday, July 19. At about 12:15 a.m. Kenedy police officers were dispatched to the scene on Highway 181 in reference to a reported fight. They found Raul Garcia (29) of Kenedy bleeding from wounds he received after being stabbed by two of the six men who jumped him. Garcia was transported to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released for injuries sustained in the attack. (click here to read the whole story) Kenedy school board splits on grievance against superintendent Kenedy school board members voted 4-3 to deny a grievance brought forward by the publisher of a local newspaper during the meeting of the school board on July 19. The complaint alleged that Superintendent Richard Irizarry unnecessarily delayed the release of minutes from school board meetings for 23 days. After returning from closed session, Trustee Ed Monson made a motion to grant the Level III grievance which was seconded by Trustee Carl Lundquist. Monson, Lundquist and Trustee Velma Garza voted in favor of the motion, but Trustees Frank Nieto, Tony Mejia, Leo Valerio and Jimmy Burns voted against and the motion failed. Board President Frank Nieto then made a motion to deny the grievance, seconded by Mejia. This vote carried with Nieto, Mejia, Valerio and Burns voting in favor while Monson, Lundquist and Garza voted against. (click here to read the whole story) New Texas laws create transparency in health care coverage for insured patients Health care coverage is about to become clearer for Texas patients, thanks to a new law the legislature passed this session. The new legislation will ensure that Texas employers, their employees, and patients have access to health care information about medical service costs and patient out-of-pocket expenses. Texas Senate Bill 1731 by Sen. Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) calls for transparency of health care costs from health insurers as well as hospitals, physicians, and other health care professionals so patients can make better and more informed health care decisions. (click here to read the whole story) $182.4 million in homeland security funding announced for Texas WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Wednesday that Texas will receive a total of $182.4 million in grant funding for homeland security and emergency preparedness needs from the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security and Commerce. The state will receive $65 million to bolster first responder communication through the Public Safety Interoperable Communications (PSIC) Program, and a combined $58.9 million through the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) and Law Enforcement Terrorism Prevention Program (LETPP). In addition, several Texas metropolitan areas will directly receive a total of $58.5 million through the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI).
