Richard Irizarry will receive $70,000 + $10,000

By Joe Baker

The Kenedy school board voted unanimously to end the employment of Superintendent Richard Irizarry during a special meeting on Friday morning.

They voted to buy out Irizarry’s contract for $70,000 plus an additional $10,000 for other expenses.

After returning from a three-hour-long closed session, Trustee Ed Monson made a motion.

"I move that we approve the settlement agreement regarding the resignation of Dr. Richard Irizarry and that we approve the buyout of his contract for the amount of $70,000 plus $10,000 for attorney fees, moving expenses and insurance expenses for the total amount of $80,000," Monson said.

Collision kills 2, injures 1 north of Gillett

By Jason Clay Jansky

A child and an adult were killed in a head-on collision northeast of Gillett Monday.

Killeen residents Manuel Sanchez (27) and 6-year-old Antonio Sanchez were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. A third victim, 3-year-old Nyalli Sanchez, was transported to University Hospital in San Antonio with severe head injuries and a broken leg.

The wreck happened at about 3:45 p.m. Monday when Manuel Sanchez began to veer his 2006 Honda into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane. Sanchez and his two children were the only ones in the car.

A 2000 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Kenneth Hester of Temple collided with the Honda after both vehicles made attempts to evade one another. The collision forced the Honda partially underneath the tractor-trailer, trapping the three-year-old girl.

Kenedy City Council hears report on status of wells

By Cathy Passmore

Water issues were among the issues discussed at the August 14 meeting of the Kenedy City Council.

Council members heard an update on the status of four wells presented by Dr. Kyle Murray and his associate from the UTSA study of wells 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Wells 4 and 6 were in better condition than wells 3 and 5, they said. Even the better wells will need repairs and they will continue updating their findings on the study.

"The UTSA budget of $25,000 from the city to conduct the study is on track," Murray said.

The $37,000 budget for contractors to work on the wells may not be sufficient, however.

Runge crews busy fixing water leaks

By Jason Clay Jansky

Runge city crew workers are keeping very busy with water leaks in town and council members are hoping to be able to do something about the problem soon, according to discussion at the August 14 city council meeting.

In the last few weeks, crews have had to work on 18 different leaks, Mayor Homer Lott, Jr. said at the meeting. Every one of the leaks has been attributed to the infamous "black pipe" — shoddy material installed more than a decade ago that cracks under the slightest pressure.

"We keep going back, repairing and repairing," Councilman Tony Casillas said, expressing his frustration with the problem.

Lott agreed and said something needed to be done to replace the pipe soon, but no official decision was made on the problem.

County considers tax hike to pay for $3.1 million construction project

By Cathy Passmore

County officials consulted with Robert Henderson, financial advisor, at their August 14 meeting concerning the big picture of the county’s budget.

The county seeks approval through the publication of Notice of Intentions to issue one or more series of certificates of obligation to go out and finance $3.1 million for a new office building and repairs for the capitol improvements, according to Henderson.

He reviewed the requirements and regulations needed to be in compliance with the Securities and Exchange Commission rule 1502-12.
