Law enforcement officers arrest Karnes City man on drug charges

By Jason Clay Jansky

A man is in custody after the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at his Karnes City home looking for drugs Saturday.

Willie Lewis Campbell, 27, was arrested that day after four county deputies and one Karnes City police officer say they found more than one gram of cocaine and $460 cash in a black lockbox in his home on 207 North Apperson Street.

Karnes County Sheriff David Jalufka said the search warrant, issued by County Judge Alger Kendall, Jr., was the culmination of a four-month-long investigation run by Deputy Steve Monsivais.

By Jason Clay Jansky

The Country Village Apartments in Kenedy are up for sale after its group of owners has considered foreclosure, but the apartment manager insists residents have nothing to worry about.

For Cristi Baskerville, it’s business as usual at the two-story apartment complex, despite the business being up for sale with a $4 million price tag.

"Financially we are strong. We have no problems paying our bills, payroll, or making repairs," she said. "The property (owners have) never recovered from a really bad first five years."

Cyclist overcomes challenges to finish MS150 bike run

By Cathy Passmore

As the cyclists came through the Karnes City area on Saturday morning, Cathy Passmore waited for her friend and former co-worker at Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio, Matthew Montez.

This was especially anticipated by both of them since she hadn’t seen her co-worker after the end of May when she retired, and Matthew hadn’t been able to ride in the Multiple Sclerosis ride in two years.

A year ago this month, the day before last year’s scheduled ride, he was playing soccer with other school faculty when a bad fall and collision caused a tremendous injury to his knee. It led to surgery and a long recuperation. A ruptured patella tendon and displaced kneecap meant the orthopedist had to put his knee back together.

The pros and cons of proposed constitutional amendments

By Jason Clay Jansky

With 16 proposed initiatives on the November 6 Texas constitutional amendment election ballot, The Countywide has solicited the opinions of the county’s current state representative and one local political activist.

Democrat State Representative Yvonne Gonzales Toureilles said she plans to vote "yes" on all 16 of the amendments and describes them each as bi-partisan, "good public policy."

Karnes County Chair for the Republican Party Eric Opiela also weighed in, advising voters to support 11 of the amendments and to reject four (the remaining amendment he cites as a tough call and asks voters to vote their conscience on it).

Both submitted their in-depth looks at each constitutional amendment.
