Interim Superintendent Ann Dixon, who coordinated the search for a new permanent superintendent on behalf of the school district, explained that having two finalists gives the school district more flexibility in the event that a finalist might withdraw his or her application. The law requires that the name(s) of the finalist or finalists to be posted 21 days before a decision is made to hire the superintendent. Dixon said that sometimes a finalist will withdraw or other problems develop that will require a school board to select another finalist, and when this happens, the 21-day wait begins again, which can cause the process to become long and drawn out. "The law says you can post as many finalists as you want, so that seems to be more of the trend now," Dixon said. "San Antonio ISD – they posted three and then they had a town hall meeting and had a ‘meet the candidates’ (event)." Matula asked for "help with the cost of funding an irrigation system to water the 16 trees they were able to buy through a KCISD service-learning grant." The class took on the project under the tutelage of Jennifer Card, teacher of their freshman pre-AP biology class to get the trees to help beautify the Karnes City Park when planted. Matula and several other members of his class assured the council that "they were ready to help look after and take care of the trees and to help install the pipes for the system." Approximately ten of the trees will be planted in Park A and six in Park B. The estimated cost of procuring pipe for an underground irrigation system is $350. City officials expressed admiration for the students wanting to be involved in the park. After discussion, County Attorney Bob Busselman said that he would meet with the parties involved in the request to start the procedure for closure. That would include a petition needed from all of the owners that have property on the roads. Commissioner James Rosales said that this same request had come up several years ago, but some of the property owners objected because of a cemetery in the area. County Judge Alger Kendall, Jr. said that he would like several county officials go out and take a look at the roads involved. It was decided to take up the matter again after the completion of the necessary procedures. The court approved a burn ban for Karnes County as well as a ban prohibiting the sale and use of aerial fireworks. All outdoor burning is prohibited under the current burn ban. The Finch family’s entry into the funeral business dates back to 1951, when Barney Finch was asked to form a funeral insurance company in Cuero, Texas. Ten years later, Barney and his wife Alta, returned to their Gonzales County roots by purchasing half interest in the Mennenga Funeral Home in Nixon. This was in 1961, and their partner in that venture was their son, Don Finch, a graduate of the University of Texas and a licensed mortician.
