Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital completes expansion project

$3.1 million renovation project expands hospital facilities

Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital celebrated the completion of its $3.1 million renovation project Dec. 9 after several months of construction.

The new physicians building is completed and doctors have been operating from the new location for several days. The new emergency room facilities also are completed and hospital officials are working on moving emergency services into the facilities by Dec. 18.

Hospital Administrator Nancy Kinkler said the move has to be slow because the hospital still needs to provide emergency care during the transition period.

"The doctors are in, the construction is complete, and we’ll be seeing patients in the new emergency department Dec. 18," she said.

Karnes County Tactical Team raids house in Kenedy

Police arrest three people and seize cocaine, marijuana and cash

Kenedy police ended an investigation into drug activity Friday when the Karnes County Tactical Team served a search warrant at 207 Lavaca St.

Three individuals in their twenties were arrested after police say they found drugs in the home and on the individuals.

Members of the tactical team recovered an assortment of drugs, according to Kenedy Police Sergeant Jeremy Stevens.

"We located a large quantity of illegal narcotics," he said.

Candidates file for March primary elections

Several local candidates have filed for county offices and are seeking positions on Commissioners Court, the sheriff’s seat, constable positions, and other offices. They will square off in the upcoming March 4, 2008 Democratic and Republican Primary Elections.

In the sheriff’s race, incumbent David Jalufka has filed for re-election as a Democrat and one challenger, Charles White, has also filed for the position as a Democrat.

For Karnes County Commissioner precinct 1, Carl Hummel has filed as a Democrat and Steve Ryan has filed as a Republican.

Several other candidates currently have no opposition.

43 indicted by Karnes County Grand Jury

A Karnes County grand jury returned 43 indictments Dec. 6, charging several individuals with a variety of crimes.

Of the 43 indictments, 13 were theft related, nine were drug related, and five were sex related crimes. Two individuals were charged with indecency with a child and one was charged with sexual assault of a child. Two individuals also were charged with injury to a child.
