News (last updated on January 2, 2008) Cost of new county building estimated at over $3 million By Cathy Passmore During Commissioners Court’s last meeting of 2007, Andrew Perez and David Bogel of the Synero Architecture Studio presented a report on the status and progress concerning the new county office building. The report contained drawings of the proposed building and outlined the current square footage as designed and recommended to fulfill the needs of the various county agencies. But this all reflected a cost well over the $3 million budgeted for the building. After a lengthy discussion on how best to get the cost within the budget, the architects asked the county officials for direction regarding which square footage should be cut in order to reduce the cost. The architects reminded county officials that time to make changes and/or rearrange the scope and size of the offices is required soon as building costs will continue to rise. (click here to read the whole story) Karnes County Toys for Tots delivers brighter Christmas to 203 families By Jason Clay Jansky Karnes County’s Toys for Tots program was a large success this year thanks to the cash and toy donations from area residents. County volunteer firefighters and police passed out turkey dinners and toys to 570 children from 203 different families on Dec. 21. Donations were accepted via boxes placed around the county and program volunteers also held several toy drives to build up their stockpile of goodies. Karnes City Fire Chief Charlie Malik said there are many people from a wide array of organizations in the county that volunteer their time every year to make the program a success.
