By Jeff Steele

Adrian and Dominic Zapata attended school on Feb. 28 like any other day.

Unbeknownst to them their day would turn out other than ordinary. The children were going to have a surprise visitor, someone they have not seen in a year, their Dad.

Eloy Zapata, a staff sergeant (SSG) in the United States Army, returned home on Feb. 28 after a year-long deployment in Afghanistan with his unit, the 2nd Aviation Battalion, 82 Airborne Division. Zapata deployed in January of 2007 and has just recently returned to the states.

Zapata is a 2000 graduate of Runge High School and is the son of Philip and Gloria Zapata of Runge.

The visit was organized by his mom, Gloria, teacher Veronica Patton and aides Lorenza Mendoza and Dora Philips, in order to surprise Adrian and Dominic. The boys knew their Dad was coming home on leave, but were unaware when he would arrive.

Falls City school board discusses facility improvements

By Kevin Matula

The Falls City ISD board of trustees met at a special meeting, Wednesday, March 5 to prioritize district needs/goals and determine funds to be used.

"I preface all these (proposals) by saying that one of the duties of this board, is to make decisions to where to allocate funds and prioritize the needs of the district," said Superintendent Linda Bettin.

According to Bettin the district site-based committee proposed improvements at their own meeting that were priorities such as additional restrooms at the high school, concession stand/restroom, a vehicle, varsity locker room upgrade, and a new bus.

"Any time we as a community and taxpayers see money spent in one way or another it is important to me to basically see that that money is spent first of all in the most needed areas," community member Jeffery Dziuk said in public comment. "I know this school’s roof is in terrible shape, there are other things that I think could use some improving on the grounds themselves, if that means that we take care of that first, that should be our priority."
