Karnes County's newspaper News (last updated on March 19, 2008) Runge woman killed in single vehicle rollover accident Pickup truck rolls, lands in creek bottom near Cuero By Joe Baker A Runge woman was killed in a one-vehicle rollover accident Sunday morning on State Highway 72 at a location about 1.6 miles west of Cuero. DPS Spokesperson Tela Mange said that no one else was injured in the accident which took the life of Yolanda Salinas Olveda, 48, of Runge. Olveda, who worked as a prison guard, was wearing her seatbelt while driving a 2005 Ford F-150 pickup at about 6:15 a.m. (click here to read the whole story) Kenedy officials approve tax freeze By Cathy Passmore The Kenedy City Council unanimously approved the request for a freeze on taxes for homestead property owners disabled or 65 years and older at their Feb. 26 meeting. The freeze goes into effect beginning in 2009 with 2008 taxes as the rate and going into perpetuity until ownership of the property changes hands or significant improvements are made on the property. The council then heard the first reading concerning the Kenedy 4B Corporation’s expenditure of funds for a neighborhood empowerment in zone #1. No action was taken at this time as another reading will take place at the next official council meeting in March. During the closed executive session, the council discussed and approved the duties and renewal of the employment contract for City Manager Reggie Winters. (click here to read the whole story) County approves homestead tax freeze By Cathy Passmore A final discussion concerning the homestead tax freeze for the disabled or 65 and older citizens of Karnes County began the Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday, March 11. When bringing the question to a motion, the court voted unanimously to pass the tax freeze, with this year’s 2008 tax assessments as the basis for the following years and going into effect in 2009. A detailed description of the San Antonio River Authority (SARA) and its services, including the progress it has made, was presented to the court. Several members of the board of directors of SARA shared their support and concern for protecting our waterways. "We are pleased to be able to share our booklet with members of the court and the audience with updated lists and pictures of the many projects that we are committed to," said Suzanne Scott, general manager of the organization. The mission of SARA is "to protect and preserve our shared water resources, and together with our partners, pursue innovative solutions that will serve generations to come as indicated in the booklet," she stated. (click here to read the whole story) KCISD trustees approve changes to cheerleader constitution By Kevin Matula The Karnes City ISD Board of Trustees accepted changes to the 2008-2009 cheerleader constitution at the March 10 regular meeting. Board Secretary Terry Johnson opposed the new constitution and Trustee Rosendo Martinez was absent. "The squad has not been a competitive squad in the past years, I don’t know that’s something that they want to do in the future," new cheerleading sponsor Mari Copeland said. "… if you are not competing and you’re in there to build morale and spirit for the school and for community, then if all ten candidates meet the criteria as far as character and grades, then why not take all ten." Copeland proposed to have ten cheerleaders instead of eight, as well as lowering the student vote percentage by ten percent and adding it to the judges’ score. Organizers are encouraging residents to mark their calendars for Saturday, April 19. Well-known on the South Texas dance hall circuit, the San Antonio native went on to regional success in the country music business. He was the first country artist to record "Amarillo by Morning."
