Kenedy man charged in theft of $4,100 in lottery tickets

By Jason Clay Jansky

A Kenedy man was arrested August 31 after police suspected he’d stolen $4,100 worth of Texas Lottery scratch-off tickets from his employer.

Miguel Grimaldo worked the graveyard shift at Texas Star, a gasoline and convenience store in Kenedy at the intersection of U.S. Highway 181 and State Highway 73.

When he arrived for work August 31 a few minutes before midnight, he was taken into custody and charged with theft over $1,500 which is a state jail felony.

Kenedy Police Chief Duane Dubose said the arrest was made after officer Jeremy Stevens reviewed surveillance tape at the request of the store manager. Stevens then obtained an arrest warrant from precinct one Justice of the Peace Cathy Gustafson.

The tape showed Grimaldo gaining access to an area of the store where the scratch-off tickets were being stored, and then later activating them at the register, police said.

Grimaldo was released from custody at the Karnes County Jail on a $5,000 bond September 1.
