Accident shuts down traffic on Hwy 181
By Jason Clay Jansky
A woman’s life was saved after her overturned vehicle caught fire during a midday accident in the southbound bar ditch on the side of U.S. Highway 181 between Hobson and Karnes City on December 7.
Sixty-five-year-old Kenedy resident Bobbie Lozano was thrown from her 2005 Ford Sport Trac as it overturned. She landed about 20 yards from the vehicle before it caught fire. DPS Trooper Alfred Alejos said her ejection probably saved her life.
He called it a "one in a million shot," saying "The seatbelt was connected. I would begin to believe that she wasn’t (buckled up), but I’m not going to make that conclusion."
Lozano told the trooper that she could not remember anything about the accident.
No one else was hurt in the wreck.
Alejos said information gathered at the scene showed Lozano was traveling northbound on the highway. Her tire tracks showed a drastic change in direction off the roadway just before the rest stop heading out of Karnes City.
Lozano apparently made a sharp overcorrection after veering off the highway, which sent her vehicle spinning into the southbound section of the highway. It rolled three times.
Traffic was stopped on the highway to allow for transportation by AirLife helicopter to a San Antonio hospital where she remains in stable condition.
