Falls City’s mayor assumes duties of county treasurer
County Treasurer Nancy Duckett will likely step down
By Jason Clay Jansky
After five months of absence, County Treasurer Nancy Duckett may be resigning soon, according to County Judge Alger Kendall, Jr.
After hearing of her plans, Karnes County’s Commissioners Court interviewed five different applicants and chose Falls City resident Vi Malone to replace Duckett. Malone has been serving as chief deputy treasurer, awaiting Duckett’s official resignation.
"We’ve been informed that Nancy intends to submit a resignation shortly. Based on that, we have hired Vi Malone to serve as temporary chief deputy treasurer," Kendall said.
Malone has left her previous office of mayor of Falls City. Council member Brent Houdmann will replace her.
Kendall said five different applicants were interviewed for the job and that many factors, including experience and other credentials, were considered.
"There were a lot of things to consider. That’s not to take away at all from the rest of the people. We had some very good applicants," he said.
If Duckett resigns, county officials stated that they intend to appoint Malone in her place. Because the position is an elected office, Malone will have to run for the office in next year’s election.
As chief deputy treasurer, Malone said the treasurer’s office is already hard at work making up for lost time.
"We’re trying to get caught up right now on reconciling bank statements and some filing," Malone said.
Duckett has been away from her post as county treasurer since January. Kendall said her uncertain medical condition has kept her from returning while also keeping her in the dark as to when she’d be able to come back to work.
