San Marcos man dies in accident south of Hobson
By Jason Clay Jansky
A San Marcos man died June 16 after his vehicle struck another vehicle from behind on FM 81 about a mile north of the intersection at FM 1144.
Nicholas Wagener, a 24-year-old from San Marcos, was driving his 2006 Toyota Tacoma at a high rate of speed around 7:30 p.m. when the accident occurred, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Wagener’s vehicle crested a hill and, as he descended, he came up behind a 1975 Ford F350 pickup truck driven by 48-year-old Thomas Kroll of Victoria.
Kroll had slowed down to about 25 miles an hour and was preparing to make a left turn into a private driveway, according to the DPS accident report. Wagener had been traveling too fast to notice the vehicle in time to slow down.
His Tacoma struck the rear of Kroll’s F350, sending Wagener into the southbound bar ditch. Kroll suffered no injuries as a result of the wreck. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelt restraints.
DPS Trooper Steven Bailey said Wagener had been drinking, but wasn’t over the legal limit. Justice of the Peace Gilbert Garza said Wagener died as a result of multiple internal injuries caused by the crash.
