Law enforcement officers arrest Karnes City man on drug charges
By Jason Clay Jansky
A man is in custody after the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at his Karnes City home looking for drugs Saturday.
Willie Lewis Campbell, 27, was arrested that day after four county deputies and one Karnes City police officer say they found more than one gram of cocaine and $460 cash in a black lockbox in his home on 207 North Apperson Street.
Karnes County Sheriff David Jalufka said the search warrant, issued by County Judge Alger Kendall, Jr., was the culmination of a four-month-long investigation run by Deputy Steve Monsivais.
The amount of drugs found was small compared to large drug busts carried out several years ago, but Jalufka said small-time dealers are pretty much all that’s left in Karnes County after the big ones were taken out.
The cocaine was separated into nine packets, each one no larger than a common packet of table sugar. They each retail on the street for about $20, Jalufka said.
The warrant was served without forced entry and Campbell led investigators straight to the black lockbox, according to Monsivais.
Precinct four Karnes County Justice of the Peace Gilbert Garza set Campbell’s bond at $100,000. He remained in the custody of the sheriff’s department as of press time Tuesday.
Campbell was charged with possession with intent to deliver an amount more than one gram but less than four, a class B felony in Texas. If convicted, he could face as little as two years and a maximum of 20 years in prison along with a fine as large as $10,000.
