Fire guts Runge home

By Jason Clay Jansky

A fire in Runge claimed the home of one family on Frobese Street Friday.

A passerby noticed smoke and fire coming from the residence of Virginia and Lupe Juarez at about
2:30 p.m. and knocked on the home’s front door. Virginia was inside with her two young children unaware of the fire.

All three made it out safely, but the fire spread quickly and Runge volunteer firefighters were only able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby homes. Kenedy volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene around 2:50 p.m. to assist Runge.

Runge Fire Chief Margarito Villanueva said the cause of the fire currently is under investigation.

"I thank Kenedy for coming out because we only had three (firefighters)" Villanueva said.

A dollar amount on the damage has not yet been figured, though the entire house was consumed by water and fire damage. The Juarez family did not have insurance on the home, according to Villanueva.
