Gillett man’s home burns down

Tragedy follows loss of son in Iraq

By Jason Clay Jansky

A Karnes County man has lost nearly everything in his life and local leaders are urging citizens to lend a helping hand.

Tony Inman has been sifting through the ashes since Jan. 4 when his home near Gillett on State Highway 119 burned down. All of his worldly possessions were inside and the loss came at a time when Inman was grieving for a loss much greater: his son.

U.S. Army Captain Rowdy Inman was killed Dec. 26 by small-arms fire during dismounted combat operations in Mosul, Iraq. The 38-year-old’s funeral was held in Killeen where he grew up.

After putting his son to rest, Tony Inman was left with no home to return to and his entire life turned upside down. Local leaders are asking for prayer and donations to help him move through his loss.

"It’s a very sad story," said Stephanie Squires, community relations manager with the American Red Cross’s San Antonio chapter. "Now he’s trying to put the pieces back together and needs some extra support."

Karnes City Baptist Church Pastor Jay Fleming also is urging area residents to pray and give during the aftermath of the tragedy.

"He’s a proud father of a soldier who had served our country well and (was) on his fifth tour in Iraq," Fleming said. "He is partially disabled with a back injury and is on a limited retirement income because of that."

Fleming has helped to set up a fund at Karnes City National Bank. Those that have cash donations can ask about the "S.A. Inman Benefit Fund" at the bank.

"Although Tony is not a long-time resident of Karnes County, I believe that the people of our county can find it in our hearts to help him get back on his feet," Fleming said.

For now, Inman is staying with his sister and says he’s looking at mobile homes that need lots of repair. Any kind of donation is welcome and Inman is especially looking for construction material to help put a roof back over his head.

Those interested in donating material goods can contact Inman directly at 830-203-1010.
