Kenedy schools close following incident with principal
By Joe Baker
Kenedy ISD Superintendent Jan LaCour made the decision late Sunday night to close Kenedy ISD schools on Monday due to an unspecified incident.
"We are investigating an incident that recently took place and we are in the process of determining the specifics," LaCour said in a press release sent to The Countywide Monday morning.
"We are not at liberty to discuss this right now. We are reviewing what if any action needs to be taken. Administratively, we are following our procedures and gathering our information before a decision is made."
Kenedy schools were re-opened Tuesday.
Kenedy Police Chief Duane DuBose told The Countywide that Kenedy Middle School Principal Rick Johnson has been on administrative leave with the school district.
"During that administrative leave he was asked not to come back on property unless he has a meeting with the superintendent," DuBose said.
"Apparently, on Friday, at some time, he went to the campus. I don’t know when he went, but he went to the campus and he did not have an appointment to meet with the superintendent. She was not even there."
"He came here (Kenedy Police Department office) – I don’t know which one came first – he came by the PD and told us that he was going to go to Oklahoma and get away from Kenedy for a while (to clear his mind)."
"Sunday afternoon, apparently, at home (he resides in Beeville), he was getting ready to leave. He got in his truck – he does own some firearms – loaded his truck up and took off. His wife felt that he had an altered mental status due to either too much medication or not enough. So she contacted the Beeville Police Department."
"During that time, the Beeville Police Department were at the house and they had conversations with Mr. Johnson through his wife on her cell phone. Every thirty minutes or so he would call and he was giving referencing points of where he was at, such as ‘I’m in Buda,’ and so forth – the referencing points he was giving made sense with the timeline going to Oklahoma – they were matching. We were pretty sure he was going to Oklahoma, but we were not 100 percent sure."
"Because of having issues at the school and not being able to confirm his location, the school decided to go ahead and cancel school."
"Yesterday evening, at about 6:30 p.m., Beeville PD produced a teletype to all law-enforcement agencies referencing Mr. Johnson driving to Oklahoma, subject may have altered mental status… It goes through a computer system to all dispatchers."
"What happened was, when they sent that to our dispatch, it was read over the air. That’s when all the rumors started."
"We were not able to confirm until 12:30 through GPS and the phone company that the cell site was coming (from) Oklahoma. (On Monday morning) he contacted our office here and we have spoken to him and we have also spoken to his father. He is in Oklahoma."
Contrary to rumor, Chief DuBose said he had no confirmation of any alleged threats made to anyone in the Kenedy area.
"We don’t have any statements of threats or anything here in Kenedy, at all. We were acting more from the information from Beeville PD (received through family members.)," DuBose said.
Beeville Police Department Lieutenant Michael Willow said that although there were rumors alleging that Johnson left his house in a rage with intentions of doing harm to certain people in the Kenedy area, the facts do not support this.
"We are investigating a complaint," Willow said. "He didn’t leave in a rage. He didn’t leave with intentions to go and harm anyone."
Willow said that he had no reason to believe that any direct threats of violence were made by Johnson.
"He didn’t leave (Sunday) morning to go and take violent action," Willow said.
Willow said the school district closed on Monday as a precautionary measure.
"You can never be too cautious about protecting the lives of children," Willow said. "Sometimes we just have to take that extra step to make sure that everybody is safe and fortunately everybody is safe at this time."
Willow said there were no criminal charges pending against Johnson at this time, but the case is still under investigation.
