Earthquake rattles north end of Karnes County

By Joe Baker

An earthquake shook up some local residents in the Falls City area and other areas on the northwest side of Karnes County Monday morning.

According to information from the U. S. Geological Survey, the quake happened at 4:51 a.m. and registered a 3.7 on the Richter scale and was detected about six miles southwest of Falls City in an area where the Karnes, Wilson and Atascosa County lines intersect with one another.

The epicenter of the quake was reportedly at a depth of 3.1 miles below ground level.

The Karnes County sheriff’s office said that they had received several phone calls letting them know about the earthquake, but there had been no reports of injuries or property damage resulting from the seismic incident.

Tammy Crews, who lives in the Falls City area near the Wilson County line, was awakened by the quake.

"I was already kind of half awake because I have twins and I had just laid a baby down – probably five minutes before it happened," Crews said. "I felt it. It scared me. I jumped out of bed."

Crews explained that at first she wasn’t too concerned because her husband was sleeping on the couch and sometimes when he turns over, it kind of shakes the mobile home that they live in.

"When I felt it, all the handles on my jewelry box, just kind of hit – and it sounded like the TV moved," she said.

"I jumped out of bed, but I blew it off because two nights ago on the Sci-Fi Channel I was watching ‘10.5’ which is about an earthquake," Crews said explaining that at first she thought she might have been dreaming.

Earthquakes are very rare events in Karnes County, but Crews said she remembers an earthquake that happened in the Hobson area about 20 years ago. She recalled being in church in the evening hours when that quake happened.
