Kenedy Little League looking for solutions to problems

By Jason Clay Jansky

Board members with the Kenedy Little League are looking to the league’s next fiscal year and upcoming September meeting as an opportunity to fix problems the league has been facing.

Rumors are started and circulated frequently. Many of them — including the rumor Little League National is investigating Kenedy Little League for having $6,000 in missing funds — are not true.

The concession stand the league has operated this year has lost money, but a league financial committee has determined no foul play took place.

"Supposedly the committee (decided) that there was nothing missing. How true that is, I don’t know. I haven’t had much contact with these people except with Carol (Moses), the president," Little League District Administrator Frank Cavazos said, adding that no one from Little League National is investigating Kenedy as far as he knows.

"I haven’t heard anything. I haven’t gotten any correspondence from Little League Southern Regional. If they were being investigated, they would let me know," he said.

Moses said the league has faced some issues this year, including financial problems with the concession stand. She stated plans to run for president for the following year, as well, and said cleaning up the problems will depend on how hard new board members are willing to work.

"My goal for little league next year is to have the people in positions that we need to have … that actually want to be there and do their job, because we had board members that had specific job responsibilities that didn’t get done," she said.

Cavazos said he’s heard rumors about the Kenedy Little League’s problems, too. He said a Little League anywhere in the country is only as good as the people running it.

"Basically, how it’s run (depends on) the people you have in it. Sometimes you have good people and sometimes you don’t. I’ve seen a lot of people that don’t get along with one another, and that’s one of the problems Kenedy’s Little League has," he explained. "Sometimes you have … five here, and five there, and these three work together, and these other three work together — so there’s not always that communication among all these board members."

New board members will be picked during Kenedy Little League’s September meeting, and any parent involved with the league can attend to have their say in the matter.

"The Little Leagues in district 27 this year have had a lot of problems. It’s not just Kenedy, and it’s not just Karnes City, and it’s not just Runge. It’s districtwide. Miscommunication. That’s what it is," Moses said. "No matter what kind of business you’re in, you’re always going to have a little bit of communication problems. We worked through it, we got through the season the best we could, (and) it was a successful season."
