Local officials set tax rates for next fiscal year
By Jason Clay Jansky
Public entities around the county have finalized their tax rates for their coming fiscal years, and every one of them have adopted their effective rates, or the tax rate that will net them roughly the same amount of income as last year.
All taxing entities have the option to adjust their rates every year in accordance with rising or falling property values. If property values go up, the effective tax rate goes down to compensate.
Karnes County’s government adopted the rate of .7360, or 73.6 cents per $100 property valuation. This is a slight decrease from last year’s rate of .7461. The rate means a county resident with $50,000 worth of property can expect to pay $368 per year in county taxes of there was no change in the property’s valuation.
The Road and Bridge tax rate also saw a slight decrease from .0533 to .0525.
Including road, bridge, fire, and San Antonio River Authority tax rates, the amount a person inside the county with $50,000 in property would pay is $530.
Cities and school districts also tax county residents that reside within their boundaries.
Karnes City ISD adopted a rate of 1.3184 which is lower than last year’s rate of 1.4400. The City of Karnes City set their rate at .8197 which is slightly higher than last year’s rate of .8190.
In Falls City, the school officials set a rate of 1.5532, which is lower than last year’s rate of 1.6893. The City of Falls City’s tax rate was set at .7674, which is slightly higher than last year’s rate of .7695.
In Runge, the school’s rate was set at 1.3700, which is lower than last year’s rate of 1.5000. The City of Runge set their rate at .7504, which is slightly higher than last year’s rate.
In Kenedy, school officials adopted a rate of 1.4588, which is lower than last year’s rate of 1.5800. The City of Kenedy set a rate of .5482, which is slightly lower than last year’s rate of .5540.
