Falls City officials prioritize street construction, repair

By Jason Clay Jansky

Falls City’s council got together October 11 to move closer toward finalizing the city’s plans on street construction and repair for the coming fiscal year.

Five main streets were discussed. Two of the streets, Riviere and Chambourd, are in the Titzman subdivision area and were described by City Secretary Lauren Sturm as being the city’s top priority.

Council members also will be looking at working on Terrell, Elwood, and Yoakum streets.

The city has about $112,000 to spend on street maintenance, repair, and construction for the 2006-2007 fiscal year. Some of that money has rolled over from unspent street dollars in last year’s budget.

Council members also accepted a $3,700 bid to replace a busted air conditioner at city hall. The unit is about 12 years old and has been defective for around two months, Mayor Vi Malone said.

The mayor also brought the city’s overtime policy up for discussion, saying that a few workers have been pushing it each week with their hours and should try to scale back.

The policy itself wasn’t changed, though. It states that no worker should work more than five hours overtime each week without the mayor’s approval except for in an emergency.

A few routine items also were approved during the meeting. Malone was appointed the city’s investment officer, chief financial officer, and treasurer for the coming fiscal year. Council members also agreed to sign a copier maintenance contract and decided to go out for bids again on their hay lease agreement.
