Three children injured in ATV accident near Kenedy

By Jason Clay Jansky

Three children were injured October 14 when the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) they were riding in flipped over on County Road 330 near the Kenedy Cemetery.

Tammy Strmiska owned the 2000 Polaris Ranger, and the three children riding it were her relatives. Police would not release their names.

A 10-year-old boy was driving and two 12-year-old girls were being carried as passengers when the accident happened.

The child who was driving the ATV was told to stay off the county road, according to DPS Trooper Alfred Alejos. He was traveling on it when he moved left to avoid a puddle of water in the roadway. The ATV began to lose control and he attempted to correct to the right.

"You could see the tracks. Basically right after he overcorrected to the right, it took him into the bar ditch. The vehicle overturned once, ejecting all occupants," Alejos said.

All three were wearing their seatbelts, but still were ejected due to the nature of the roll-over. The ATV landed on top of the driver. The two girls were relatively unharmed and together moved the boy away from the vehicle after the wreck.

The driver suffered several severe lacerations to his face and was transported to a San Antonio hospital for treatment, Alejos said. Both girls suffered only superficial scratches and bruises.

DPS has decided not to file any charges related to the accident.
