$1.8 million state grant awarded to Kenedy ISD

By Jason Clay Jansky

The state has awarded a $1.8 million grant to the Kenedy Independent School District, the only grant of its kind to go to a Texas school district this year.

The first year of the grant will put $607,587 into Kenedy ISD grant officials’ hands, and they plan to get to work upgrading Kenedy’s higher education systems.

Getting students to take on more difficult classes and increase their personal education standards is the overall goal of the grant.

To meet that end, Kenedy grant officials will be using the money to fund several different projects:

·An "advanced placement management team" comprised of existing Kenedy ISD staff members like the superintendent, principal, and grant administrator will be formed. Their overall focus will be getting students to sign up for AP (advanced placement) and pre-AP classes.

·Several educational coaches will be hired to provide tutoring for students work with classroom teachers on advanced teaching techniques during regular school hours.

·A grant coordinator will be hired to manage the educational coaches.

·Two advanced placement counselors will be hired to help promote advanced classes and tutoring to help students taking AP courses. The counselors also will arrange for career events, help students apply for financial aid for college, and provide information on real world jobs that utilize the skills taught in AP courses.

·An interactive online tutorial and mentor system will be made available for Kenedy ISD students.

·The entire teaching staff at Kenedy ISD will receive six hours of "cultural competency" training where the teachers will learn about the different cultures of the students attending Kenedy ISD.

·All teachers will also receive four hours of training on advanced classes and will get 32 hours each of online training in their specific subject.

"That means if you’ve got an English teacher and there’s some new teaching technique involved in presentation of English, that person will be able to sign up for continuing education classes to enhance her skills," Kenedy ISD Federal Grants Director Jim Tom Nichols said. "What we’re trying to do is turn the attitude of educational mediocrity around to one of excellence in the Kenedy schools — to encourage students to not just look toward high school graduation as in the ultimate goal but to consider some level of college as an expectation."

Kenedy school officials have already set to laying the groundwork for the coming programs and are looking to hold a big event some time in early 2007 to commemorate the official start of the grant program.
