Psychologist says Karnes City boy is not a danger to other students
By Jason Clay Jansky
A court-appointed psychologist has determined the Karnes City boy facing criminal charges of making a terroristic threat is not a danger or threat to his peers, according to a recent statement made by Karnes County’s county judge.
County Judge Judge Alger Kendall, Jr. said the reason the 14-year-old was held 20 days in juvenile detention was so a psychological evaluation could be carried out to determine whether he would be a threat if released into his parents’ custody.
"What we did is detain the individual until we could have a psychologist evaluate him and give me some suggestions as to the potential of the threat being carried out," Kendall said. "It’s something that worries me with all the things that have occurred throughout the United States."
The 14-year-old boy whose name has not been released by police was arrested April 27 for allegedly saying he wanted to "get even" with a list of students during an online chat conversation the day prior.
Police and other county officials have offered no other reason for the arrest other than that the subject used the words "get even." So far, school officials and police both say the arrested boy did not specify what he meant and had not made any explicit threats of violence against his peers.
County Attorney Bobby Busselman, one of the officials who contributed to the decision to arrest the boy, said despite the lack of specifics, he still felt the boy was guilty of making a terroristic threat.
The charges against the boy have not been dropped. Neither his parents nor his lawyer were willing to issue a public comment as of press time Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the boy has been moved away from Karnes City Junior High to an alternative education campus.
