Motorcyclist leads police on high speed chase

By Jason Clay Jansky

A Karnes City man is facing felony charges after police say he led them on a high-speed chase through the county across two cities August 23.

Kenedy police Sergeant Jeremy Stevens said the chase started out in Kenedy on F.M. 793 where 24-year-old Charles Randall Trice was riding his motorcycle 62 miles an hour in a 40-mile-an-hour zone.

Kenedy police officer Felix Casanova turned on his overhead lights and signaled Stevens to stop, police reports indicate, but Trice kept going. His speed reached in excess of 120 miles an hour as he sped down F.M. 793 heading toward Texas Highway 80.

Police say Trice then made a left-hand turn onto 80 and headed toward Karnes City with state DPS troopers, county sheriff deputies, and Karnes City police all in pursuit.

Trice reached Karnes City, turned onto State Highway 123, and then took Badgerette Drive heading toward U.S. Highway 181 via Calvert Street, Stevens said.

The chase ended around a sharp curve just before Trice hit 181.

"He ran off the road there and laid the bike over in the grass. He was apprehended by officers at that time. He didn’t have time to run," Stevens said.

Trice is facing state jail felony charges of evading arrest on a vehicle. If convicted, he will face at least 180 days in jail and the judge can impose a maximum two year sentence. Trice also could face a fine as large as $10,000.

Trice was not intoxicated or hiding any illegal items in his attempt to flee, Stevens said, adding that Trice gave a statement indicating he attempted to flee because he didn’t want a speeding ticket (he had been issued one in a separate case just a few days prior) and because he "was having a bad day."
