Kenedy woman killed in motorcycle-car crash

By Joe Baker

A Kenedy woman was killed by injuries sustained when the motorcycle she and her husband were riding struck a car on Highway 181 in Kenedy near Scrubber’s Car Wash.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, according to information from Kenedy Police Sergeant Jeremy Stevens.

A black Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling northbound on Highway 181 near the car wash when a blue Plymouth Neon pulled out onto the highway hitting the motorcycle.

Driving the motorcycle was Juan Guzman, Jr. (48) and the passenger on the motorcycle was his wife Virginia Guzman (46). Both were Kenedy residents.

Both were ejected from the motorcycle and Virginia Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was airlifted from the scene to University Hospital in San Antonio for treatment to injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Plymouth Neon was Martha Vasquez (19) of Kenedy. She and her 10-month-old child were in the vehicle along with two adult passengers. Neither the driver nor any of the passengers in the car were injured.

"She didn’t see the motorcycle," Kenedy Police Sergeant Jeremy Stevens said.

Stevens explained that the accident happened in a dimly lit location on a dark night.

DPS Trooper Steve Bailey happened to be traveling behind the motorcycle when the accident happened. The trooper stopped immediately and rendered whatever aid he could at the scene.

A citation will be issued to Vasquez for driving with an unrestrained child in the vehicle.

Police say that the case will be forwarded to the district attorney who will consider pursuing a possible grand jury indictment of criminally negligent homicide.

Stevens explained that in incidents where a person allegedly causes the death of another person by negligence, then that case is sent to the district attorney for presentation to the grand jury.

Virginia Guzman was employed as head custodian at Kenedy Elementary School and well known by many people in the community.

"Mrs. Guzman has worked at Kenedy Elementary for many years," said Jaime Rodriguez, Kenedy Elementary School principal. "She was loved by everyone on our staff, as well as all our students. She was very involved with our students throughout their daily routines. She often recognized students for birthdays, as well as good behavior.

"She would always go that extra mile to help staff in any way that she could," Rodriguez said. "She is going to be greatly missed by everyone here at Kenedy Elementary School."
