Austin television news crew visits Panna Maria
By Jason Clay Jansky
An Austin television news station has taken interest in Karnes County and will be featuring Panna Maria during its evening broadcast September 30.
Fox 7 News sent a cameraman and Field Producer Nik Ciccone to the area September 25, and they spent a good while looking at historic aspects of the oldest permanent Polish settlement in the nation.
"We’re looking at how people came to be there … how it ends up being such an important place for Polish people across the country," Ciccone said. "A guy I worked with came across the history of the place. We just kind of started looking at pictures and finding other stories about the settlement and its history and the people. It seemed just really interesting and something unique to Texas that you won’t find anywhere else."
Part of a regular series called "Texas Tales" on Fox 7 News, the story on Panna Maria will air September 30 in the Austin area.
"We’ll be looking at some old photographs, talking about the history and the church and the people and the language. After that, we’ll promote the upcoming anniversary celebration and homecoming turkey dinner. So we’ll have a little thing for people that might want to travel down there," Ciccone said.
The signal from Fox 7 doesn’t reach Karnes County, but the station’s Web site — www.fox7.com — should have the video up within a week or two after the broadcast.
Those in the Austin area will be able to view the program during 9 p.m. news on channel 7.
