Local student injured in accident

By Jason Clay Jansky

A local college student escaped a grisly wreck nearly unharmed October 19 when his convertible smashed into two 18-wheelers.

Nineteen-year-old Jessie Mendoza, Jr. of Karnes City was traveling north from Beeville when his 1997 BMW Z3 convertible began to drift into the southbound lane.

Two 18-wheelers hauling base material were traveling south in tandem heading toward Mendoza. Both truck drivers noticed the convertible heading into oncoming traffic and moved over onto the southbound lane’s shoulder.

Mendoza struck the side of the first 18-wheeler, then spun around and hit the side of the second truck before his car came to a stop in the southbound lane. He was wearing his seatbelt.

"When they saw him, the driver (of the 18-wheeler) said he immediately pulled off to the shoulder. After the impact, it spun him around 180 degrees and then he hit the trailing 18-wheeler that had pulled off of the roadway," DPS Trooper Alfred Alejos explained.

If both trucks had not moved onto the side of the road, the convertible would’ve hit them dead on.

Mendoza suffered only minor scratches and was not hospitalized. His BMW was totaled in the wreck.

DPS is still considering filing charges in the case.
